SIMPLE REMEDIES FOR NAUSEA AND VOMITING

Nausea and vomiting are the symptoms of different diseases. Sometimes they can be associated with stomach cramps or discomfort. It can be caused due to various causes like reflux, morning sickness in pregnancy, motion sickness, gastritis, stress, food poisoning or induced by chemotherapy. Sensation of nausea and throwing up both makes us feel worse. Here are few home remedies that will help in nausea and vomiting.        

  1. Salt & Sugar mixture - In a glass of water, mix 1 tablespoon sugar and a pinch of salt and drink in small sips. This will help to prevent electrolyte imbalance.  Do this once every hour.
  2. Cook rice in an open vessel by adding more quantity of water (For ½ cup rice, add 1½ cups water). When rice is cooked, strain it and the starchy liquid can be taken mixed with salt. 
  3. Cinnamon & cardamom tea can be taken 2 – 3 times a day. In a cup of boiling water, add 1 inch piece of cinnamon stick or ½ tsp cinnamon powder and 3 to 4 cardamom seeds and remove from fire. Let it steep for 10 minutes. Then filter, add 1 tsp honey and drink.
  4. Chew 5 – 8 fresh mint leaves. Or mix 1 tsp mint juice, ½ tsp lemon juice, 1 tsp honey and consume 2 – 3 times a day.
  5. In a cup of water add 1 tsp apple cider vinegar and drink. Apple cider vinegar is best to relieve nausea. It is an anti-microbial and helps in food poisoning.
  6. Keep 1 clove in mouth and chew / suck it. It helps reduce gastric irritability.
  7. Chew fennel seeds mixed with sugar frequently. Alternatively fennel & licorice infusion can be taken. 1 tsp crushed fennel seeds and ¼ tsp crushed licorice sticks or licorice powder are tied in a small piece of cotton cloth, and then added to a glass of hot water and left for 10 – 15 minutes. Then remove the cloth bag and drink the water. If vomiting is due to gastric reflux, this will help.
  8. Lemon – Lemon slice can be smelled to help reduce nausea and calm your mind and stomach as well. Also lemon water can be beneficial as it will help in fluid balance and energize you. Squeeze one lemon in half liter water and add 3 tablespoon sugar and 3 pinches salt, mix well and drink it in small sips.
Remedies using Ginger

  1. Ginger – One of the best remedies for gastrointestinal system. It is an anti-emetic, hence arrests vomiting and nausea caused due to numerous reasons. It has phenols that relax stomach muscles, soothes the irritated stomach lining, helps remove toxins or undigested food particles through your digestive system.  Different preparations of ginger can be beneficial. Some recipes are below.
  2. Ginger tea – In a glass of hot water, add ¼ tsp grated fresh ginger or 1 gm dry ginger powder. Let it steep for 5 – 7 minutes, and then drink it warm. Half lemon can be squeezed in it or 5 crushed mint leaves can be added it to.
  3. ½ tsp of ginger juice can be mixed with ½ tsp honey and licked.
  4. ¼ tsp of grated fresh ginger or small piece of crushed ginger can be mixed with 4 to 5 pinches of salt and taken.
  5. Ginger ale – In a pan, add 1 cup of chopped ginger, ¼ cup of lemon peel and 4 cups of water. Let it boil over high flame. When it starts boiling, simmer it and let it boil uncovered for 15 minutes. You may stir the mixture every now and then. When the water has reduced to 2 cups, strain it and pour it in a glass bottle. Let it cool. Then refrigerate this. This can be diluted with water and taken as and when needed. Add 20 ml of this syrup in a glass of water and mix well and drink.
