Know what to expect from an Ayurveda treatment

With the increasing awareness about health and with AYUSH Ministry, Government of India’s support in promoting Ayurveda especially during & post-Covid - 19 pandemic, more and more people are preferring to take Ayurveda treatments. However some people think of Ayurveda as a miracle cure that cures all health problems. Whereas some others consider Ayurveda herbal formulations as natural medicines free from side effects and consume it without the consultation with an Ayurveda Physician. So here in this article we will discuss some basic points about Ayurveda medicine for the common man.

Is Ayurveda a Miracle Cure for All Health Problems?

The answer to this question is definitely ‘NO’. Just like any other system of medicine, not all diseases are curable in Ayurveda. Ayurveda explains four types of diseases - Easily curable, Curable but with difficulty, Controllable but not curable and Incurable. This means not all diseases are curable, hence acceptance of the condition is necessary and try to put in effort for best outcome of treatment.

How much time will the treatment take?

The first question a patient asks the doctor is ‘When will I get better?’. As disease pathogenesis does not occur in a day or a week, the treatment will also not work immediately.

Why is Ayurveda Costly?

Even conventional medicine is costly but people don’t question why surgery is costly, why steroids are costly because these procedures are well understood by people.

Is Ayurveda free from side effects?

Food is medicine when used appropriately and the same food can become poison if used inappropriately. Same is with Ayurveda herbs. Generally speaking Ayurveda herbs are free from adverse reactions caused by chemical drugs because whole plant is used in Ayurveda. Whole plant has various chemical constituents which work synergistically with one another, so balance the adverse reaction. However individual health status should be taken into account. For example, Guggulu which is good for lowering cholesterol levels and alleviate pain can aggravate gastritis, Yashtimadhu although good for sore throat elevates blood pressure, Ashwagandha which increases immunity increases body weight as well hence to be taken with caution by obese persons, Chitrakadi vati which aids in digestion has many salts as ingredients which may increase blood pressure, Sarpagandha lowers blood pressure but can cause breathing problems. So it is always advisable to take Ayurveda formulation under the supervision of an Ayurveda physician.
