Seven Ayurveda Techniques in the Time of COVID-19

People across the globe are stressed and anxious due to the Covid-19 Pandemic as they are concerned about their own health & their family’s too. They are trying to find ways to stay immune to coronavirus. Here are some Ayurveda techniques which will help to improve your immunity & strength during this covid-19 pandemic.

1. Gandusha (Oil Pulling) – Take 1 tsp of sesame oil or coconut oil in your mouth and gently swish it for 2 minutes, then spit it out. Oil pulling technique dates back to 5000 years ago which us mentioned as an important daily regimen procedure for improving oral hygiene as well as preventing systemic diseases. Since oil pulling has anti-inflammatory, anti-viral & anti-bacterial effects, it helps to prevent respiratory infections. It enhances immunity as well.

2. Abhyanga (Self massage) – Apply lukewarm sesame oil or coconut oil or ghee on the entire body, take small quantity and apply like a lotion, spreading well on the body after shower. However, if you are not habituated to the oiliness, then you may wash it off with warm water but without soap. Then pat your body dry. This will help to improve skin health & defence mechanism by acting as a barrier against invasion of microorganisms.

3. Pratimarsha Nasya (Oil application in Nostrils) – Apply one drop of sesame oil or ghee inside each nostril before bedtime. This will help to lubricate the nasal mucosa thereby creating a barrier against microorganisms. You may use a dropper to instill the oil or wash your hands & apply one drop of oil in the little finger & smear it inside the nostrils & wash your hands again.

4. Take Golden milk – Fry ¼ tsp of curcuma (turmeric) in 1 tsp ghee till it turns dark color in moderate flame. Make sure not to burn it. Now add this to a cup of warm milk, add 2 crushed whole pepper and drink it. If you wish, you may add cane sugar to it. Turmeric has anti-microbial properties including anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti – fungal and anti-malarial activities. Black pepper also has anti-viral properties. Milk nourishes the tissues & improves Kapha in the body. Kapha dosha represents immunity. In our fast-paced lifestyle, Vata dosha is high because we are always under constant stress. Increase of Vata causes depletion of tissues & reduction of Kapha, leading to frequent infections. Thus, Golden milk enhances immunity and strengthens the body against respiratory infections. You can also fry large quantity of turmeric in ghee and store it in a moist-free airtight container and use it every day with warm milk.

5. Sip Herbal infusion – Spices have anti-microbial properties, hence used widely in Indian cuisine not only to improve taste but to enhance immunity. In a glass of hot water, add 1 clove, 2 whole black pepper, 1 small piece of cinnamon, 1-inch piece of fresh ginger and 2 leaves of basil. Let it steep for 5 – 7 minutes, then filter & add 1 tsp honey (add honey only when the infusion is lukewarm) and drink. Herbal infusion should be consumed twice a day.

6. Drink Lemon water / Amalaki – Vitamin C is well known for its anti-viral properties, especially provides immunity against influenza and other respiratory infections caused due to virus. Hence one should drink lemon water 2 – 3 times a day. Also, one can take oranges and other citrus fruits. The herb Amalaki, one of the ingredients of Triphala is packed with anti-oxidants and has anti-viral properties especially against influenza and other infectious respiratory illness.

7. Breathing exercise –
  • At Morning - Lie down on the back (supine position). Be relaxed and place on hand on the abdomen. Breathe in and feel the belly bulging out and breathe out gently while feeling the belly going in. Repeat this for 10 times while focusing on the breath & belly every time.
  • In the Afternoon - Sit on a chair, relax / extend the shoulders, straighten the vertebra and then breathe in and breathe out (10 times) gently while focusing on your breath.
  • For the Evening – Sit on the floor with legs crossed and do alternate nostril breathing. Close your right nostril with the thumb and inhale through the left nostril gently and deeply as much as possible. Then close the left nostril with the ring finger and exhale slowly through the right nostril. Now breathe in through the left nostril while keeping the right nostril closed with the thumb and breathe out through the right nostril while keeping the left nostril closed. Repeat these 10 times. These three breathing exercises will help to improve the health of respiratory system.
The above suggestions are easy to follow by people of all ages. Incorporate the above in your daily life and stay immune to Coronavirus.
