Tech and Testosterone: The daily digital habits that may damage the male hormone silently!

Modern digital conveniences offer increased efficiency but the constant proximity to the devices lead to unintended challenges to male reproductive health. As growing evidence shows that the common tech habits may quietly affect sperm parameters and endocrine functions. However safe-guarding your long-term vitality by implementing few evidence-based adjustments.

1.     Trapped Body Heat (Scrotal Hyperthermia) - Keeping laptop on your lap and working for extended hours or placing mobile in your front pant pocket traps the body heat in groin region affecting sperm production (spermatogenesis) much like overheating affects a computer’s hard drive.

Evidence Based Solutions -
  •      Keep laptops off your lap. Put it on a desk instead preferably with a cooling pad.
  •      Opt for breathable, loose-fitting clothing made from natural fibers.
  •      Keep your mobile phones in a bag, backpack or a jacket.
  •      Use speakerphone or wired headsets during long calls.

2.     The Blue Light Effect (Circadian Disruption) - Glaring at the screen for long hours, especially at night exposes our eyes to blue light. So, our brain gets fooled into thinking that it’s still daytime and hence stops the body from making the sleep hormone melatonin. The catch is that most of the testosterone is produced by our body when we sleep deeply (uninterrupted REM sleep). So basically, sleeping less raises your stress hormone, lowers your sleep hormone and drops your male hormone!
Digital Hygiene Protocols -
  •      Establish a digital curfew – Power down screens 1.5 to 2 hours before bedtime.
  •      Turn night mode / airplane mode on your computer and phone.
  •      Sleep in a dark room.
  •      Work in a well-lit room.
  •      Use antiglare specs for screenwork.

3.    Muscular inactivity (Metabolic derangement) - Prolonged sitting stops active muscle movement and compresses blood vessels in the lower body thus lowering nutrient delivery to the pelvic region and gradually impact testosterone levels negatively over time.
Switch to active movement -
  • You can do chair yoga like seated leg lifts and twist your torso.
  • Stand up and stretch every one hour.
  • Walk around the room while you talk on phone.
  • But the best and long-term solution is to have regular walks and resistance training to naturally improve metabolism and optimize testosterone.

4.     Digital Burnout (High cortisol) - The mental pressure from online work and constant notifications creates room for high stress which makes more cortisol. So, your brain shifts into stress survival mode leaving no energy to produce testosterone.
Achieve better stress balance -
  •     Take slow and deep breaths for 5 minutes daily morning and evening.
  •      Turn off non-important notifications on your phone and laptop.
  •     Step away from your workstation to drink a glass of water or eat a meal or a snack.

5.     Plastic and Chemical Exposure (Endocrine disruptors) - Soft plastic and vinyl phone cases as well as laptops, charging cables and headphones often contain phthalates and bisphenols (BPA) to make them flexible and durable. Over the period of time, these chemicals from the plastics can slowly transfer to our skin through heat, friction and sweat potentially causing endocrine disruption interfering with testosterone regulation.

Change your habits -
  •    Opt for eco-friendly and BPA free phone cases made of certified plant-based materials (compostable, bamboo fibers or straw) or alternative material cases made of wood or metal.
  •      Use speakerphone for long calls to avoid holding the device using your hands.
  •      Wash your hands after prolonged use of phone with a plastic cover.
  •      Remove the case when the phone heats up during heavy use or charging.
Set healthy digital habits such as bedtime break, time caps and no-phone zones to enjoy good health. Smart tech use helps keep your male hormones balanced along with offering good mental and physical health. Remember ‘Prevention is always better than cure’.
